There’s no doubt the unconscious mind protects us physically, like when we breathe and how to swim. But it also protects us emotionally from bad feelings - like with approaching new friends and avoiding rejection.
The tricky thing is, it is the nature of the unconscious mind to hold onto habits and behaviors. Once it has learnt how we deal with something, or how we behave at certain and specific times - it is very reluctant to make changes. Otherwise we would forget how to do things, and that would make us vulnerable or place us in danger.
Hypnosis assists by allowing us to communicate directly with this part of the mind. Once the unconscious mind ‘sees’ the logic in changing the behavior, there’s no longer a need to retain it.
